Solving Stranded Credits

Presentation

Watch Now!

Transfer students face many challenges when attempting to apply previously earned credits to their next institution. One understudied challenge faced by students is what we call “stranded credits”: academic credits that students earned but cannot access due to an unpaid balance with a previously attended institution that is holding their transcript. This session will introduce the problem of stranded credits, describe how it can interact with other transfer policies, present original data on the scope of the issue nationwide, and discuss some potential solutions to the problem that have been adopted at the local and state levels.

Supporting Student Success: The Transfer Student Bill of Rights
