Presentation
This session will examine the “some college, no degree” (SCND) challenge to higher education. Participate in a discussion of the issues involved and lessons learned—what works and what doesn’t—from the institution, system, and statewide perspectives. The NSC Research Center 2019 report numbers this population at 35.5+ million nationally. This population reflects all student demographics, the most prominent being socio-economic status with students—primarily transfer—from all educational sectors. Learn more about this session.

Providing comprehensive academic advising to students transferring into community college is critical to support their success, retention, and persistence. Yet, this is challenging due to official transcripts not being sent, last minute applications, and transcript evaluation turn-around time. By building a robust transfer equivalency database with College Source’s Transfer Evaluation System (TES), Bunker Hill Community College has developed new practices to provide unofficial transcript evaluations during first advising appointments so students can register for their classes and create academic plans with confidence.

Panel Discussion
Nothing compares to the experience that comes from working at a college or university and directly with students. CollegeSource is lucky to have a deep bench of people with that first-hand knowledge, who spent most of their careers “in the trenches” as advisors, registrars, and transfer credit evaluators. In this light-hearted session (modeled after the newlywed game!), our in-house experts will be prompted with various transfer topics and asked to share what they would tell their former selves, or institutions today, to Stop/Start/Continue doing. There are sure to be some great recommendations, interesting dialogue, and humorous moments.

Transferology is the only nationwide network that allows students, advisors, and parents to see how courses, exams, and military credits transfer to participating schools. Membership in the Transferology network gives institutions of higher education a nationwide presence for recruiting students and a venue for publicizing transfer articulation information.

uAchieve is an online degree audit system that allows students and advisors to track progress toward degree completion while highlighting the remaining courses and requirements needed to graduate. With Transfer Articulation (TA) in uAchieve, you can store course or program-specific equivalencies as well as statewide transfer rules and agreements. Identify Home (Target) or Transfer (source) courses, treat Transfer courses differently than Home courses in an audit report, translate grades and credit from Transfer-to-Home values, and more!

Presentation
Figuring out how to help community college transfer students’ credits not only be accepted but also applied to their baccalaureate major is a critical yet challenging aim of many practitioners and policymakers. One promising approach is for states and colleges to build on their general transfer programs to create more structured, major-specific transfer pathways which often guarantee entry into the major post-transfer. Panelists will highlight how Ohio has organized statewide field-specific transfer pathways, how they are being used to help students plan for transfer at a community college, and new research on the relationship between taking the right STEM foundational coursework and subsequent STEM transfer success.
