Non-traditional credit
On Tuesday, September 17, CollegeSource hosted the fourth session of the Let’s Talk Transfer community discussion series, where transfer professionals (regardless of whether they use CollegeSource products) are invited to ask questions and share their expertise on transfer-related topics.
Interest in the series continues to grow, with over 700 college and university staff signed up to participate. Over 253 individuals (including CollegeSource staff) were able to join the discussion live.

Topics of discussion
This month’s discussion focused on non-traditional credit and opened with two poll questions.
1. How many undergraduate students attended your institution during the 2023-2024 academic year?
Attendees reported their institutions’ enrollment from the previous academic year. 21% of (or 36) respondents indicated up to 22,750 students attended their institution that year, followed closely by 20% of attendees (or 35 individuals) reporting 7,750 attended.
2. What types of non-traditional credit does your institution grant credit for?
Attendees reported granting credit for the following types of non-traditional learning experiences:
Examples of “Other” were foreign language proficiency, licensures and certifications (including first aid and CPR), and corporate training and credentials.
Non-traditional credit
The main topic of discussion centered on non-traditional credit. Attendees were eager to discuss:
-
- Use of external assessments when evaluating prior learning credit and how credit awards may differ from credit recommendations.
- Processes for awarding credit for military courses and occupations.
- Engaging and training faculty in the prior learning assessment process.
We were happy to be joined by a representative from the American Council on Education (or ACE, pronounced “A-C-E”) who organizes and coordinates their review of military training. They spoke about the rigor of the review process and how faculty may benefit from participating.
Breakout rooms
After 45 minutes of group discussion, attendees headed into the breakout rooms hosted by the CollegeSource Client Advisory Board and CollegeSource staff. The discussion was incredible and centered on the following topics:
-
- Standardized exams
- Military credit
- Experiential learning
Sarah and Tim stayed in the main room and had their own discussions about non-traditional credit.
